~ A welcoming community of God's people
Our church magazine takes its title from this significant piece of local history, The Eagle Wing. In 2002, Jennifer Hulme, a member of the congregation and well known local artist, created the current cover design, which strikingly depicts the symbols of the wing, sail and cross.
The Eagle Wing was the first emigrant ship to leave Ulster for America. She sailed from Groomsport in September 1636, carrying 140 Presbyterians in search of a life free from persecution in the New World. Fearful weather, however, forced them to return home after two months at sea. Although she did not reach her destination, the Eagle Wing became the inspiration for others to make their attempts and since those days, several million people have left our shores, taking with them their culture and traditions. These cultural links with America are celebrated each year at the North Down Eagle Wing Festival in August.
The Eagle Wing magazine is published, both in hard copy and online, usually three times per year – Autumn, Winter and Spring. It contains articles written by our members, congregational news, plus items of interest relating to the local community and the church worldwide.
Submissions should be emailed to the editor at eaglewing@groomsportpresbyterian.com. Everyone is welcome to contribute, especially the younger members of the congregation.
