The Tuesday Club was formed in October 2017 for people in the community who live alone, to try and overcome the problems of isolation and loneliness.
We started up in the Boat House with fourteen people under the name “Groomsport Hobbies and Games Club”, but this was changed to the Tuesday Club – easier to remember. We have had many interesting speakers over the months, starting with Alan Chambers, our local MLA who told us a bit about his work. Sixteen people came along that day. The NI Fire and Rescue Service came to talk about dealing with fire, the Commissioner for Older People and the RSPB were also amongst our visitors. We were invited to hold our meetings in the Presbyterian Church Halls, and in May, Paul Miller showed some beautiful photography to twenty-six members.
We were growing slowly but surely.
People do not stop being lonely in the summertime, so we decided to keep going all year round, and Ards and North Down Borough Council awarded us a start-up grant to help defray costs. We also held a fundraising concert in October, with the male voice choir of the PSNI/RUC entertaining a church full of people who helped us raise £2547 for the NI Air Ambulance, the two churches in the village and some other small charities. The rest is in our bank balance, and we hope to take our most loyal members on an outing in July.
We now have over fifty names on our books, with room for many more. Meetings start at 2:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month, unless it is a bank holiday when we put the meeting back for a week.
We started a film club on alternate Tuesdays during the months October to March, and we show some classic films to which everyone is invited, not just club members. This has been successful too and we always have a cup of tea. We charge £2 per meeting for the Tuesday Club and only ask for a voluntary donation for the film shows.
